The challenge of achieving a sustainable human civilization is the greatest that humanity has ever faced. A true understanding of the scope of that challenge was first fully addressed by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 1992-The Earth Summit. Its central document, Agenda 21, attempted, for the first time, to outline the depth and range of the tasks confronting humanity in the quest to bring civilization in line with the natural world and achieve a balance between human needs and natural limits. The popular version of this massive international document was written by Daniel Sitarz, with an introduction by Senator Paul Simon and published by EarthPress.
In 1998, President Clinton's Council on Sustainable Development attempted to bring the lessons learned at Rio to America and, through a series of meetings between business interests, environmental groups, labor and civil rights organizations, developed a series of proposals collectively referred to as "Sustainable America". The popular version of these comprehensive proposals was written by Daniel Sitarz, with a foreword by Vice President Al Gore, and published by EarthPress.
In 2008, American businesses were provided with a blueprint on how to effectively green their business operations with the publication of "Greening Your Business". This title has its own website: www.greeningyourbusiness.org
